It was a mug's game, the drunken thieves return their ill considered haul to this Faulkland pub

Goodness knows what might have happened if this wassailing mug had continued to be lost.

Removed from the famous Tuckers Grave Inn the landlady was desperate for its return.

Perhaps like the traditionally good luck that a wassail is reported to bring to the harvest, times would get even harsher?

Maybe ill winds would have befallen this traditional cider house in Faulkland, one of only six left in the country ?

Fables and tales run deep at this 200 year old inn, which is steeped in local history, preserved in time and pickled in cider.

So finding one of their famous mugs missing after a busy Saturday night did not bode well. They put up an appeal for its return - perhaps not thinking it would be returned.

But lo and behold today (October 14) look what came in the post?

Sent by a contritely named group calling themselves the "Hungover campers," full of apologies and regret, much like we feel after drinking a little too much.

They described the moment they took the mug as a " moment of absolute stupidity in a very drunken moment, it was inexcusible (sic) when you offered wonderful hospitality)."

Tuckers Graves Inn explained: " It's only a few years old but it was hand made with love by a friend ( Emma Chapman) especially for our wassailing nights .

" We're a really friendly old school pub and make everyone feel welcome so having someone abusing that hospitality is more gutting more than anything. Think the thieves were probably drunk and definitely regret stealing it ( or maybe getting caught) "

But now it is safely back and for this legendary pub, luck is smiling again.
