Peasedown Community Trust has set itself the ambitious target of planting over 500 trees in the village this year.

Working in partnership with Bath & North East Somerset Council and campaign group, More Trees for B&NES, the charity wants to encourage residents to get involved with the initiative.

Trust Chairman, Gavin Heathcote, said: "Trees are one of the best solutions to our climate emergency. They improve poor air quality, alleviate the risk of flooding, lock up carbon, boost our wellbeing – making us feel healthier and happier, and create habitats for wildlife.

Throughout 2021, the Trust will be doing a lot to raise awareness of the environment and the need to look after it."

Of the 500 trees expected to be planted this year, the first 50 (native saplings) are arriving from the supplier this week. A number of these are being made available for residents to take home and plant in their gardens.

Next Saturday, 6th March, anyone living in Peasedown St John who would like a free tree can collect one from Peasedown Community Library, between 10am – 12 noon.

Library Operations Manager, Cllr Karen Walker, added: "Pop along to the library next Saturday morning at The Hive Community Centre to collect your free tree.

" This is an easy and fun way for us all to 'do our bit' for the environment. We are lucky to have these beautiful native saplings available to giveaway to the public. Don't miss your opportunity!"

Peasedown Community Library is located at The Hive, Bath Road, BA2 8DH.

Please let the Community Trust know in advance if you'd like a tree by emailing [email protected].

In line with government guidance, the tree giveaway will take place outside. Both libraries and garden centres are classed as essential services and can stay open during lockdown.
