Children at St Julian's Church School in Wellow welcomed some special four-legged friends into class last week.
Molly, Elsie, Dougie and Hope are all trained (or in-training) therapy dogs with Dogs for Health - a local organisation that uses dog therapy to tackle loneliness, isolation and mental health amongst humans.
School Headteacher, Ruth Noall, said: "They visited school with their owners with a view to becoming regular visitors in our school.
" It is well-researched that dogs can help children's mental health and wellbeing in many ways from listening to children read, being a companion for a walk or playing a game of ball so we are very excited at the prospect of a weekly doggy visit!"Dogs for Health is a non-profit organisation founded in 2020 currently covering Frome, Shepton Mallet, Coleford, Westbury and Warminster.
They offer animal assisted therapy, animal assisted interventions and animal assisted education. Their volunteers visit people in their own homes, hospitals, care homes and schools to support people through activities, education and professional therapy with the help of their dogs.
"The children loved having Dogs for Health visiting us at school. We're looking forward to welcoming our new four-legged friends again soon," added Ruth.
The school follows strict Covid-19 guidelines with risk assessments being carried out when visitors are on site.
