Cross about crossings, or the lack of them, in Radstock

At the recent Town Council meeting, councillors heard an appeal to do something about the dangerous road crossings in Radstock.

Walter Reakes, better known as Terry, who is Honorary Alderman Bath & North East Somerset Council, described the pedestrian crossing system Radstock centre as "inadequate", particularly in Nelson Ward Drive, Church Street, and Fortescue Road, where there are no pedestrian crossings.

He told the meeting: " The pedestrian crossing in The Street should be updated to a Puffin crossing, incidentally the traffic signs and road markings for indicating this crossing leave a lot to be desired as do much of the road marking in the centre."

The Radstock resident told councillors that according to figures he obtained, which may surprise them, there were 17 deaths on pelican crossings in the UK in 2012 – three children and 14 adults.

He asked the town council to write to Bath & North East Somerset Council requesting a reassessment of the pedestrian layout in the centre so improved safety measures are instigated.

The council responded by saying that they are already in communication with B&NES and have ongoing communication about road safety in Radstock.

He also drew the council's attention to the state of the wall and pavement opposite the business units at the bottom of the A362 Frome Road.

He described the pavement as a " disgrace to the highway authority. One has to realise since the development of this area the wall is holding back the weight of several homes and a hundred old wall is hardly the right method to maintain the highest standard of safety to residents, pedestrians and motorists".

If you have any comments about the roads and safety around Radstock you can contact them via their web site: https://www.radstock-tc.gov.uk/contact-us.

Or the next Town Council meeting is on March 16 at 7pm in the Methodist Hall.
