The latest inflation figures have shown that there is now a 10.5% average inflation rate - that's according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

However within the headline figure, some items, particularly basic food items, have seen prices increases by up to four times that over the past year.

As all shoppers will know, milk, sugar, butter and even pasta are costing so much more than this time last year.

According to data published by the BBC - these are some of the increases seen in shopping baskets.

  • Low fat milk - 46%
  • Olive Oil - 39.5%
  • Sugar - 38.5%
  • Cheese - 32.6%
  • Butter - 29.3%
  • Pasta - 29.1%

Overall inflation fell to 10.5% in the year to December, compared to 10.7% in November, according to the Office of National Statistics. The fall is down mainly to easing costs of petrol and energy.
