Orchid Way : Controversial housing plans just over in Mendip will be recommended at planning board

A planning application to build homes just on the edge of Writhlington - but in Mendip - will be coming before the planning board with a recommendation that they be passed.

Over 70 objections have been listed against the plans to build six houses on land adjacent to Orchid Way in Radstock.

The application is being discussed on February 17 at Mendip District Council, with the planning officer recommendation that they are approved.

Radstock Town Council has given its official recommendation that the plans are, again, thrown out, with one councillor saying previously that Mendip is just dumping housing on the edge of B&NES just to hit housing targets.

It has formally objected to the plans, writing: " The area is open country side and has been prone to flooding in the past. The Council is also concerned with the use of amenities and infrastructure which will predominantly affect B&NES and Radstock residents."

The plans for homes on the site has been put in on two previous occasions: In 2014 the application was rejected on the grounds that the site was outside the development limit, and did nothing to bring economic activity to Radstock, or to extend the range of facilities for the community,

Other comments opposing the plans include:

: It will add to the existing traffic congestion on the Frome Road and surrounding country lanes

: The current end to the estate is a quiet cul-de-sac where young children regularly play and should the planning be passed this will become a through road for heavy vehicles

: There are already a large number of homes planned for the Radco site and the infrastructure of medical services and shops in Radstock will not support any more numbers.

The planning application for the land in Writhington is under reference 2020/1169/OTS on the Mendip planning site.
