At the Town Council meeting, vigorous discussion took place over what Radstock could do to combat the effects of climate change.

One solution, already under way since 2015 is an application to reopen the Radstock railway.

This has been mothballed since 1990 but is a perfectly feasible prospect since it does not possess the problems that other Beeching – axed lines are confronted with. For one thing it is the only point at which the Somer Valley could be reconnected to the main line, and for another it is in relatively good condition. 

Yes, a huge pile of money will have to be spent but there are people, members of the North Somerset Railway CIC who are making progress. Already the bridges have been inspected and assessed, the Ecology survey has been completed and much time has been spent canvassing opinion, gauging popularity. At today's ( February 18) meeting with Network Rail was upbeat. 

There is much more to be done of course; first, towards obtaining planning permission and second, securing the Transport Works Order so that the project becomes a reality.

Opinions from all local people are required. You may be a potential user or just worried about noise. Don't be! Modern technology means that the trains won't be heard. 

You will be able to ride in comfort to Bath, Bristol, Trowbridge or Swindon without thought of battling with the morning and evening traffic turmoil we face every day. I believe that reopening the railway would be a turning point in the fortunes of Radstock and its inhabitants.
