It's normal for Shoscombe School's oldest pupils to take over The Egg Theatre in Bath at the end of the summer term – but not this year.

With the school in lockdown and everything was cancelled.

What was a rural village school to do instead?

Headteacher, Ruth Noall, explains:

"After their initial shock and disappointment, some of our fantastic teachers started to hatch a plan.

This year's end-of-year production of 'Wind in the Willows' could still take place, but it would have to be in lockdown!

The Year 6 children used their Write Stuff writing lessons to put together the full narration of the story. The whole school were sent songs to learn and pictures to draw.

There were no rehearsals or time to re-shoot scenes as those children who were able to attend school were busy editing the story, finding costumes, learning their lines and seeking out perfect filming locations in and around school. Slowly but surely the production took shape. Scenes were filmed in school and on location by the river in Shoscombe."

Even whilst following strict social distancing guidelines, the Year 6 Pupils who were in school, produced a full production of Wind in the Willows. They wrote, performed and filmed it themselves. On the last day of term last week, all the Year 6's dressed up specially for the premiere.

"This was a truly remarkable feat", added Ruth. "We now have a 40-minute production filmed and uploaded to YouTube for parents, friends and the public to enjoy. Thank you to everyone who took part and made this happen!"

Shoscombe Church School is a rural school located on the edge of the Somer Valley. Its location makes it a popular choice for parents and pupils with its extensive range of outside play and learning opportunities.
