The BBC has opened up its news archive to everyone and it has released a news report on the last mine of the Somerset mines to close, that in Radstock.

The piece aired on Friday, 28 September 1973 and is a piece of moving history.

The reporter was a young John Craven, who interviewed one of the miners on the last shift at Writhlington and how he felt about not going underground any more - and how much he would miss the comradeship at the coal face.
