Beaming smiles from these youngsters at Wellow

Pupils at Shoscombe Church School and St Julian's School in Wellow were treated to Christmas lunch, gifts, and a visit from Santa.

Headteacher at both schools, Ruth Noall, said: "This has been a school term like no other! Despite the challenges of ensuring we follow and implement coronavirus guidelines to keep everyone safe, our staff have worked exceptionally hard to make sure pupils have the best possible learning experience.

Councillors were told about plans to plant trees around Radstock. Over in Frome they have committed to planting thousands of trees under the Wild about Trees initiative

A short and if councillors can manage the budget, a sweet possibility of keeping the precept unchanged, was the outcome of the regular Radstock Town Council meeting.

Councillors discussed the on-going transfer of the Tom Huyton play park, which could be completed in 2021, and how this could be one of the places chosen to be part of what is going to be a national tree planting project.

In this most difficult of years, the prospect of light defeating darkness, of good overcoming evil, is particularly relevant. It has been a year when hope has been unfulfilled and the darkness created by an unknown enemy has seemed close. For a period, even the churches were shut in a forlorn reminder of the interdict placed on England by Pope Innocent III against the godless King John. This background may make it hard to realise that the light of Christ is upon us and that the commemoration of it is all the more important.

The Radstock Mayor writes:

So Christmas is with us once again, but without much of the usual joy. I feel a great deal of sympathy with those who have looked forward to this week and being with their loved ones. After all, this is what the feast is all about: the Holy Family with its divine addition made real and reflected in our own families, expressed through love. Yet for many it is not to be and it can only be hoped that the current situation is a temporary glitch, with normal festivities resuming next year.
